Gwen’s Law to Be Signed By Gov. Bobby Jindal Today

A big victory today for Louisiana's domestic violence victims, as Gwen's Law is signed in Baton Rouge.

In an email from State Representative Roy Burrell, who authored the bill, he told us a ceremonial bill-signing will be held in the Governor's Press Room at 3 p.m.

The bill was named for Gwen Cox Salley, who was murdered by her estranged husband Michael, who then killed himself. She had issued a protective order against Michael, who was out on bail just hours after being arrested for holding Gwen at gunpoint and threatening to kill her and their daughter.

Rep. Burrell told us the law will allow for a cooling-off period through a contradictory hearing for the abuser by a judge, when issuing a Uniform Abuse Protection Order as a condition of bail.

Burrell said this bill will hopefully provide greater human protections and prevent many deaths due to domestic violence.
