Gun Owners Battle the Dallas Zoo

Gun owners won a dramatic victory in May when lawmakers voted to allow handguns to be openly carried on Texas streets, but the latest debate has to do with anti-gun signs that are popping up in some public places.

A Houston-based gun advocacy group has sent a letter of complaint to the Dallas Zoo arguing that signs there forbidding visitors from possessing a firearm are illegal.

Edwin Walker with Texas Law Shield say cities and other government bodies have too broadly interpreted state law to believe they can restrict gun possession. He says concealed weapons can be carried on public property, including the Dallas Zoo.

Zoo spokeswoman Laurie Holloway says state law allows the zoo to prohibit firearms because it's considered both an amusement park and an educational institution, two areas of exemption.
