SHREVEPORT, LA – Today is the day a nationwide boycott is happening. This event is being pushed by the People’s Union USA. Organizers are calling for an "economic blackout" today. They are urging Americans not to shop at any of the big box stores or national chains for 24 hours.

This effort is in response to federal efforts to move away from diversity initiatives.

The group posted this message on Instagram:

"For generations our families worked, sacrificed, and fought to build a better future, yet here we stand, still waiting. We the people will not wait any longer. We stand in solidarity to honor the past and carve a new path for the future."

The group hopes to show corporate America and politicians that the people have the power. Organizers say this group is not affiliated with any political party. They claim to be dedicated to corporate reform, government accountability and economic resistance. This is the first of many planned boycotts by this group. They hope to send a clear message to corporations to get them to give the working class the freedom they say is deserved. This group also wants billionaires to pay their fair share of taxes.

How Long Is the Boycott?

This boycott kicked off at midnight and will last for 24 hours. The group is encouraging Americans not to buy anything — including fast food, gas, retail and even online purchases. Supporters are encouraged to spend money only on essential items like medicine, emergency supplies and food. And if you must shop, you are encouraged to shop at locally owned stores.

When Are More Economic Blackouts Planned?

A planned weeklong blackout against Amazon is set for March 7-14. This includes Amazon and Whole Foods. Walmart will be boycotted April 7-14. The group is also pushing a boycott from buying General Mills products between April 21-28.
There is also another 24 hour nationwide blackout planned on March 28.
