Working Smoke Alarm Alerts Family to Fire in Southeast Shreveport Home

Residents of southeast Shreveport were awakened early Thursday morning to the sounds of sirens and emergency crews when a fire started in a home in Southern Trace.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 1600 block of Southern Trace Parkway at about 1:30am and when they arrived, firefighters found a two story home with heavy flames visible and smoke billowing about the subdivision.

The homeowner was alerted to the blaze by a working smoke detector and everyone was able to get out of the home as a result of that early morning warning.

The Shreveport Fire Department sent out this statement:

Firefighters immediately initiated an offensive fire attack in an effort to contain and extinguish the fire from inside the residence. As fire conditions intensified and the structural environment deteriorated, Incident Command transitioned operations from an offensive strategy to a defensive attack to ensure firefighter safety while continuing suppression efforts. The incident required a complex and coordinated response involving 17 SFD units staffed by approximately 45 firefighters and support personnel. Crews worked to establish water supply, conduct fire suppression operations, protect surrounding exposures, and maintain personnel accountability throughout the incident.

The blaze was put out at about 2:45 this morning. Investigators say the home's smoke alarm played an important role in alerting the homeowner to the developing emergency.

The Shreveport Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke alarms provide critical early warning and can significantly increase the amount of time available to
safely escape a residential fire. No word yet on what sparked the blaze. It will be under investigation.
