Louisiana Treasurer John Schroder talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright about a proposal currently before the state legislature, one that would mandate that unclaimed monies be put in a special fund, not spent by the state.

Schroder tells KEEL listeners that there are two bills, one being considered by the Appropriations Committee, the other by Ways and Means. "When I was elected to Treasurer," says Schroder, "I found out that the state was spending the balance of unclaimed properties. Whatever cash was not returned to the citizens of Louisiana, was spending it in the general fund."

Schroder then emphasizes that the amount "is somewhere north of $850 million. "We're pushing a bill that creates a trust fund with the balance." The Treasurer points out that the fund would "create dividends and interest" for the people of Louisiana.
