LDH Confirms Rare Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection Linked to Lake Claiborne
Once again, Louisiana is dealing another brain-eating amoeba infection. The single cell organism that causes this infection is known as Naegleria fowleri. Once again, the Louisiana Department of Health says the infection is in North Louisiana.
Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba, commonly found in warm freshwater environments across the United States...especially places like Louisiana. It causes a severe brain infection, known as "primary amebic meningoencephalitis" when it reaches the brain. Symptoms typically begin with a severe headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Before progressing to a stiff neck, seizures, and coma. This specific infection is extremely rare...but nearly always fatal within days of the initial symptom onset.
How Naegleria Fowleri Infection Occurs in Louisiana Freshwater
The amoeba enters the human body exclusively through the nose during water related activities in lakes, rivers, or hot springs. Sometimes, in even more rare instances, it can happen in a city water supply as well. However, it cannot infect people if swallowed, and does not spread from person to person under any circumstances.
The risk increases significantly when water temperatures rise during long periods of extreme heat...causing lower water levels, and warmer habitats for the amoeba to thrive in. The amoeba is naturally occurring, meaning there is no routine environmental testing available for public bodies of water.
Louisiana Department of Health Confirms Amoeba Case at Lake Claiborne
The Louisiana Department of Health reported a confirmed Naegleria fowleri infection in a Louisiana resident this week. According to the official news release, the resident most likely acquired the infection while swimming in Lake Claiborne, located in Claiborne Parish, shortly before illness. Health officials issued a Health Alert Network notice to all state providers on August 18th to advise on symptom tracking and reporting. Lake Claiborne is a recreational area, making this a critical alert for residents engaging in water activities.
While the overall risk of infection remains low, state health experts urge the general public to assume there is always a risk when entering warm fresh water. Swimmers can reduce their risk by keeping their heads above water, using nose clips, and avoiding digging in shallow sediment where the amoeba thrives.
Historical data shows that these infections are highly uncommon, with only 180 known cases documented nationwide from 1937 through 2025. Louisiana recorded just three cases during that period.
Public water systems are not currently implicated in this specific incident, like in some previous scares. Properly maintained and chlorinated pools also remain safe, as the amoeba cannot survive in those treated environments...leaving natural freshwater bodies as the primary focus for public caution.
