What Is the National Credit Card Debt?

The national average card debt among Americans with any type of debt was $7,756, up 1.9% from $7,615 in Q1 2025. That includes debt from bank cards and retail credit cards.

Folks in Arkansas are getting into more and more debt. That state has the fastest-growing card debt over the past year. The average balance has jumped from $5,194 to $5,704.

One of the reasons some states are seeing credit card debt rise has to do with the cost of living and rising prices. More and more consumers are using credit card debt to keep up with costs of everyday goods they need around the homes.

This problem exists across the nation. Americans collectively have $1.263 trillion in credit card debt during the second quarter of 2026.
