Shreveport’s January Heat Wave Threatening Old Records
Shreveport is starting the first full week of January feeling a lot more like spring. A stretch of unusually warm afternoons has folks asking the same question Richard Lewelling heard on air: how often do we get close to 80 degrees this early in the year?
Shreveport Forecast vs. Record Highs for Jan. 5 to Jan. 9
Here is how the week stacks up when you compare the latest Shreveport forecast to the standing record highs for each date:
- Mon, Jan 5:Forecast 67vs Record 77 (1927)
- Tue, Jan 6:Forecast 79vs Record 80 (1956)
- Wed, Jan 7:Forecast 74vs Record 79 (1965)
- Thu, Jan 8:Forecast 75vs Record 78 (1969)
- Fri, Jan 9:Forecast 74vs Record 81 (1957)
The biggest “watch day” right now is today. The forecast has Shreveport pushing the upper 70s, which puts that 80 degree record within striking distance.

Why It Feels So Weirdly Warm in North Louisiana
Lewelling told KEEL News a big ridge of high pressure helping keep the ArkLaTex well above average through the week. He also noted the normal high for Jan. 5 is 58 with a normal low of 37, which explains why this warmth feels so out of place.
Storm Timing to Watch Late Week
Warm air in January can come with a catch. The late week setup includes a thunderstorm chance, with the latest forecast calling out storms that can be severe Thursday into Friday.

Lewelling also warned on air that timing matters, and that Shreveport could see the strongest action overnight Thursday into Friday, with the threat shifting east quickly.
Weekend Reset Back Toward “Normal-ish”
The good news for anyone ready to feel January again: the weekend cool down shows up fast, with highs sliding back toward the upper 50s and lows in the 30s.
