Shreveport Crime Rates Hit Record Lows In 2019

New statistics show that Shreveport is safer now than at any point in the last 30 years.

Over the last decade, Shreveport crime has been trending down when it comes to violent crimes like homicide, rape, armed robbery, assault, and battery. With a few years of spikes mixed in, the overall trend has been a steady decline in crime.

A release from the city says:

"In 2019, the City of Shreveport posted its lowest Part I Crime rate since 1975. This includes homicide, rape, robbery, assault, battery, burglary, theft, and auto theft. Part I Crimes fell by 7 percent over the past year, and by 60 percent when compared to 1989, the highest year on record.

The violent crime rate dropped by 8 percent in 2019, falling 16 percent below Shreveport’s 50-year average. Robberies and homicides saw the sharpest declines, falling by 13 and 29 percent, respectively."

Here are some of the key numbers from the 2019 crime stats:

• In 2019, the City of Shreveport witnessed 42 homicides, compared to 59 in 2018, a drop of 29%. 
• Between Personal and Business Robberies, there were 293 in 2019, compared to 335 in 2018, a drop of 13%
• Combined Residential and Business Burglaries totaled 1,625 in 2019, down from 1,831 in 2018, a drop of 11%. 

As far as the Grand Total of major crimes in the city, Shreveport had 10,665 crimes, which is down from 11,468 in 2018. That's a total decrease of 8%.

Looking back at the last 30 years, with 1,473 total Violent Crimes in the City of Shreveport, 2019 had over 1,000 less violent crimes than 1990, 1993, and 1995. The 1,473 violent crimes were lower than any year between 2000 and 2011. The total number of violent crimes in 2019 were lower than just the Aggravated Assault numbers in 1990, 1993, 1995, 2005, 2006, and 2007.
