As we close in on the middle of the year, crime numbers continue to decline in most categories in Shreveport. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith tells the Shreveport City Council shootings and most felony crimes are down dramatically.

Murder Numbers Are Up in Shreveport
The Chief did tell the panel homicides are up 14% compared to last year. We have had 21 homicides this year compared to 18 last year. But the Chief pointed to the tragic mass murder in Cedar Grove that left 8 young children dead in a domestic violence incident.
Chief Smith says robberies of individuals is up 37% so far this year. But shootings are down 15% on the year.

Crashes in Shreveport Up Dramatically
For the past several months, auto crashes in Shreveport and Caddo Parish have continued to go up. So far this year, there have been 4864 car crashes in Shreveport. That number was at 4769 for the same timeframe last year. That means we are dealing with a 20% increase in crashes. And the worst part of these stats is that Caddo Parish leads the state in fatal car crashes. So far this year, 23 people have died in crashes in Caddo Parish.

Chief Smith says we are also making progress on fighting domestic violence. He says filings for protective orders through the Clerk of Court are up dramatically in June. He attributes that increase to a major push involving several local agencies to get help for victims of domestic abuse.
