Shreveport Fire Department Assistant Chief Fred Sanders talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about the SFD's free smoke detector and installation program.

Sanders a 32-year fire department vet, tells KEEL listeners that the smoke detectors are paid for with funds obtained through a federal grant, and adds that the SFD installed 1,200 of the devices in Shreveport homes in 2019.

Sanders, who's part of the SFD's Fire Prevention Bureau, says that, in addition to delivering and installing the smoke detectors to Shreveport homes, they'll also do home fire prevention inspections and help families put together a fire escape plan, should the need ever arise. "Anything that can be predicted, can be prevented, " says Sanders.
