$370 Million Microchip Facility Set to Transform Ruston’s Future
Ruston is preparing for one of the most significant economic developments in its history. And we're not talking about Buc-ees. Radiance Technologies, an employee-owned defense contractor with deep ties to Louisiana, including being title sponsor for the Independence Bowl, has chosen the city as the site for a new $370 million secure microchip facility.
A Turning Point for Ruston
The 40,000-square-foot plant will not only bring cutting-edge research, design, and fabrication to north Louisiana but will also change the trajectory of Ruston’s economy. With 150 new jobs averaging $85,000 a year, the project far surpasses local salary norms and will introduce a highly skilled workforce to the community.
For Ruston, known primarily as a university town, this facility signals the start of a broader identity as a technology hub. Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker told KEEL News on Tuesday, “It takes us to another level as far as recruiting companies. We feel that other companies will follow Radiance because they see that they are here.”
Walker also said, “To me it sets the city up, but also Louisiana Tech. This project is not just the City of Ruston, it’s a partnership between the university, the city, and Radiance.”
Building an Ecosystem, Not Just a Facility
Radiance CEO Bill Bailey, a Louisiana Tech alumnus, emphasized the company’s vision goes beyond one building. By anchoring its expansion in Ruston, Radiance is helping lay the groundwork for a technology ecosystem. As industries often cluster around major investments, city leaders anticipate that suppliers, logistics companies, and other complementary businesses could soon follow. This kind of growth can ripple out, boosting everything from housing demand to retail and service industries.
Higher Education as a Catalyst
Louisiana Tech University and its research park were pivotal in attracting the project. The university will receive funding to enhance its research capacity and provide specialized training programs, ensuring a pipeline of talent for Radiance and any future companies that may establish operations nearby. For Tech students, it means access to cutting-edge training and potential career opportunities without having to leave north Louisiana.
Positioning North Louisiana for the Future
While the project strengthens national chipmaking capabilities, its most immediate impact will be felt in Ruston’s neighborhoods, businesses, and classrooms. Construction alone is expected to draw contractors and trades into the area, while long-term operations will expand the city’s professional workforce.
The area has already seen attention from global tech companies, Meta’s $10 billion data center planned in nearby Richland Parish being the most recent example. With Radiance’s investment now on the books, north Louisiana is steadily carving out a reputation as a destination for technology-driven growth.
