Louisiana Education Climbs in National Rankings: Highest Ever!
Louisiana's education system is making strides, with the state now ranked 37th in the nation for pre-K through 12 education, its highest ever ranking according to the U.S. News and World Report.
State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley told KEEL News on Tuesday he attributes this progress to key reforms, including a 60% reduction in teaching vacancies, a renewed focus on core subjects like reading and math, and increased tutoring support for students in need.
Teacher Compensation and Proposed Permanent Raise
The Louisiana House recently passed a $2,000 stipend for teachers, a move Dr. Brumley supports but sees as only a temporary solution. The discussion continues about a permanent raise, with the potential for a public vote to secure additional funding for teacher pay, but Brumley is focused on the importance of adequately compensating educators, especially as Louisiana shows signs of academic improvement.
L.A. Gator Program Funding: Impact on Public Schools
Governor Landry’s signature education initiative, the L.A. Gator program, has received $93 million in funding in the latest budget bill. While the program aims to give parents more educational choices, critics argue it could divert resources away from public schools.
Dr. Brumley acknowledges the complexity of balancing support for public schools with the push for expanded educational options for parents that includes the public school system as well as private schools, charter schools and homeschool options. governor even during his campaign.
Third-Grade Retention and Literacy Standards
For the first time, Louisiana will require third graders to meet minimum reading proficiency levels to advance to the fourth grade. Dr. Brumley describes the new policy as the final component of comprehensive literacy reform, aimed at ending the practice of social promotion for unprepared students.
While the L.A. Gator funds are already allocated, parents are being notified throughout the year about their child's progress, with additional tutoring and summer school options available for those at risk of being held back.
Graduation Rates and Post-High School Readiness
As high school graduations approach, Dr. Brumley celebrates rising graduation rates but stresses the importance of ensuring diplomas hold real value. The state is focusing on helping students earn college credits, internships, and career credentials to better prepare them for life after high school.
