Louisiana’s Surprising Doctor Ranking Could Help Patients
Louisiana does not usually get this kind of national attention in healthcare, which is exactly why this new ranking stands out. A new WalletHub report places Louisiana as the third-best state in America for doctors to practice, behind only Montana and Indiana.
That may sound like a story aimed at physicians, but it could matter just as much to patients in Shreveport-Bossier. When a state becomes more attractive to doctors, it can mean better recruiting, more specialists, stronger hospital systems, and a better chance of keeping medical talent close to home.
Why Louisiana Ranked So High
The WalletHub study compared all 50 states and Washington, D.C., using 19 metrics tied to opportunity and medical environment. Those included physician wages, hospitals per capita, and the quality of public hospital systems. Louisiana finished third overall with a score of 63.94, which put it ahead of much larger states like Texas, Florida, and Georgia.

One reason appears to be cost of living. WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said a doctor’s salary stretches further in Louisiana than it would in a place like New York. He told Louisiana Radio Network, “your annual salary will go a lot farther” in a lower-cost state like Louisiana. That matters for younger doctors carrying heavy student loan debt and trying to decide where to settle down.
What That Could Mean for Shreveport-Bossier
For patients in northwest Louisiana, this is more than a bragging-rights story. If the state continues to attract physicians, regions like Shreveport-Bossier could benefit from better access to care, shorter waits, and more stability in the healthcare workforce.

The report also noted Louisiana ranks third in projected physician supply by 2032. Lupo said that points toward the possibility of making healthcare “more accessible and affordable in rural areas.” That is especially important in Louisiana, where many smaller communities still struggle with access to doctors, specialists, and long-term care options.

Shreveport already serves as a medical hub for much of North Louisiana, East Texas, and South Arkansas. Any statewide trend that helps keep doctors here could strengthen that role even more.
Good News, With a Little Perspective
This ranking does not mean every healthcare problem is solved. Patients can still face long waits, staffing shortages, and uneven access depending on specialty and location. Still, it is encouraging to see Louisiana score well in an area that touches nearly every family.
For readers in Shreveport-Bossier, this is one of those stories worth paying attention to. A state that is more appealing to doctors today could become a better place for patients tomorrow.
