SHREVEPORT, LA - Demolition work is expected to start in the next few weeks to tear down the crumbling Fairgrounds Field in Shreveport.

KEEL News asked Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux about the status of the demolition contract. Arceneaux sent us this response on Thursday evening:

"The contract will be signed tomorrow (Friday). After that, Ms. Ragle will work with the contractor on a notice to proceed and a start date. We are not able to shorten the contract period in the bid."

How Much Were the Bids for Demolition?

The city got 4 responsive bids for the tear down. Those bids ranged from $334,000 to $400,000 dollars. Shreveport has budgeted $600,000 from American Rescue Plan funding to pay for this demolition, so this bid is considerably under budget.

The lowest responsive bidder came from Lloyd D Nabor at $334,000.

What is the Timetable for Tearing down Fairgrounds Field?

The contract calls for 60 days for demolition. Mayor Arceneaux has previously told KEEL News he hoped the stadium could be torn down before the Independence Bowl on December 28, but he didn't want the work to start during the State Fair. So the demolition team will have to wait to start the work until after the Fair wraps up on November 17.

Local Group Tries to Stop Demotion of Fairgrounds Field

Friends of Fairgrounds Field has questioned the use of American Rescue Plan funding for this demolition project. They have called on Louisiana's two US Senators and the Governor to intervene. They have also asked the Caddo Commission to step in and help pump the brakes on the demolition. But the city is moving full steam ahead to tear down the 38 year old stadium.
