A Sunday-morning fire has damaged a church in the MLK area. Just before 8 yesterday morning, a deacon of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church in the 1300 block of MLK Drive arrived to open the church and found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the building. Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and had the fire under control around 8:30. The fire originated in the kitchen and Fellowship Hall area and damage was contained to that area. The remainder of the church sustained heavy smoke damage. No injuries are reported and the exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
