Louisiana SNAP recipients need to brace for some big changes. The feds have granted the state a waiver to restrict the purchases of sodas, energy drinks, and candy using SNAP benefits in the Bayou State.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins signed this waiver for Louisiana and several other states on Monday, August 4. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. joined her to sign these waivers which were granted for Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Colorado, and West Virginia.

When Do the Changes Take Effect?

The changes in each state are set to take effect in 2026. After that date, recipients will have to use cash to pay for sodas and snacks.

Governor Jeff Landry supports the change. He says this will have a long term impact on the health of Louisiana residents.

Because of the leadership of President Trump, Secretary Rollins, and Secretary Kennedy, Louisiana’s SNAP program just became much stronger and healthier, benefiting children and families for generations to come. Gone are the days of taxpayers subsidizing unhealthy lifestyles and eating habits. With today’s waiver signing, I am proud to say that Louisiana isn’t just participating in the MAHA movement; we are leading it.

What Was Previously Not Allowed in SNAP Program

Prior to this change, SNAP recipients could buy everything except for personal care products, alcohol and tobacco. Hot and prepared foods are also disallowed.

Secretary Rollins says “It is incredible to see so many states take action at this critical moment in our nation’s history and do something to begin to address chronic health problems. At USDA, we play a key role in supporting Americans who fall on hard times, and that commitment does not change. Rather, these state waivers promote healthier options for families in need.”
