"We were high school sweethearts who both love beer." That's how Shreveport natives Lindsay and Andrew Nations, founders of Great Raft Brewing, described how they came to find themselves the owners of the city's first brewery since the era of Prohibition.

"We lived in Washington, D.C. with jobs in the technical field," said Lindsay. "We'd been home brewing for a while and loved it. So we decided, let's move back home and start our own brewery."

The four person company, which opened just last October, consists of Andrew and Lindsay, plus Chief Brewer Harvey Kenney and Chief of Quality Control Charles Dempsey.

Great Raft makes three beers available year round: Southern Drawl Pale Lager, Commotion Pale Ale and Reasonably Corrupt Schwarzbier. The beer is available at nearly 50 restaurants and grocery and liquor stores in Louisiana and East Texas.

Great Raft also hosts a weekly tasting room at their brewery on Dalzell St., Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m., and Saturdays noon - 8 p.m.
