Some very concerning reports are coming out of Baton Rouge, saying the LSU athletic department is projecting a $26 million budget deficit for the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year. University President Wade Rousse presented these baseline financial projections to the Board of Regents during their annual budget meeting.

This newly projected shortfall directly follows an even larger financial hurdle from the previous season. The department operated with a confirmed $44 million deficit during the 2025-26 fiscal cycle.

The Cost of Coaching Changes and Player Payouts

Initially, there was a $44 million deficit that came through as NIL (Name, image, and likeness) became a real part of college sports. When that happened, LSU opted to spend the maximum allowed $21.5 million to remain competitive across all sports.

In reality, direct NIL compensation is only one factor contributing to the financial strain. Over the past 6 years, the athletic department has overspent its budget by a combined $177.5 million.

Leadership changes have severely compounded these budget issues. The university still owes former Head Coach Brian Kelly a $54 million buyout following his dismissal last October. That financial obligation sits alongside the seven year, $91 million contract recently awarded to current Head Coach Lane Kiffin.

None of this is new for LSU, especially the football program, who has recently had three separate Head Coaches being paid at the same time.

Looking For Private Equity Solutions

University leadership is developing a new revenue model in an attempt to stop the financial bleeding...a plan involving private equity investments tied to future media rights. Officials are currently waiting on a full brand valuation before announcing official details.

The administration insists they will retain total brand control. The long-term goal is to generate immediate cash for athletic operations while eventually providing revenue streams for the university academic system.

Every LSU Player Drafted By The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints appear to be allergic to drafting LSU players. Since the franchise started, they've picked less than a dozen LSU Tigers in the annual NFL Draft.
