SHREVEPORT, LA – Shreveport is one of the cities in Louisiana losing the most people over the past 2 years. The latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau takes a look at population shifts from 2020-2023. Shreveport and Caddo Parish has lost more than 2,500 residents.

 

What Parishes Have Lost the Most Residents?

Orleans Parish has lost 5,781 residents.

Jefferson Parish has lost 4,253 residents.

Caddo Parish lost 2,548 residents.

East Baton Rouge lost 1,624 residents.

These are the biggest losers in the state. And these communities represent the 3 largest cities in the state.

What Parishes Had the Biggest Population Increases?

Lafayette and St. Tammany Parishes are each up by more than 2,000 residents.

In northwest Louisiana Bossier Parish is up about 600 residents while DeSoto Parish gained more than 250 residents.

The statewide population in 2022 was 4,588,023. That dropped to 4,573,749 in 2023. State officials are hopeful the recent tax overhaul policies will help attract new people to Louisiana as well as keep residents here.

Across the south, more people are moving in. The southern region was the fastest growing in the nation, showing a 1% increase. The west also saw growth, bringing in .2% more residents.

The population estimates from the Census Bureau are used for federal funding allocations. The numbers are also critical for business planning and development across the nation.
