Shreveport Traffic Crashes Up 7.6% Over Two Years, Council Told

Crime numbers in Shreveport are still showing some improvement, but there are some areas that show higher numbers. Police Chief Wayne Smith gave the City Council an update on crime this week. The chief says one of our big problems has to do with car crashes and fatalities.

Year to Date Crashes

Traffic crashes have shown a steady upward trend over the past three years. In 2024, the year-to-date total stood at 6,143 reported crashes. That figure rose by about 5% in 2025 to 6,450 incidents, before climbing further to 6,613 crashes in 2026. Overall, this represents an approximate 7.6% increase in collision occurrences over the two-year period. These numbers have prompted SPD to run speed operations on our highways.

Year to Date Domestic Violence Calls for Service

This is an area of serious concern among local leaders. Calls for domestic violence incidents continue to jump. Calls are up significantly from 1,684 in 2024 to 1,884 in 2025—an increase of nearly 12%. In 2026, the volume rose slightly higher to 1,900 calls, indicating that demand for domestic violence response has largely stabilized after the initial surge.

Year to Date DWI Arrests

Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) arrests remained relatively consistent across 2024 and 2025 before experiencing a major surge in 2026. Law enforcement recorded 309 arrests in 2024 and 303 arrests in 2025, reflecting a minor drop of about 2%. However, arrests spiked dramatically in 2026 to 402—a jump of roughly 32.7% compared to 2025—highlighting a significant increase in impaired driving enforcement or incidents.

Year to Date Fatal Crashes by Parish

Chief Smith is really not happy about these numbers. He says our area leads the state for fatal crashes. Caddo Parish is number one in Louisiana with 33 fatal crashes. Livingston Parish and Calcasieu Parish follow tied with 24 fatal crashes each, while Orleans Parish reported 20. East Baton Rouge Parish recorded 17 fatal crashes, and Ouachita Parish logged the lowest total among those highlighted with 16.

Felony Crimes Reported

Major felony crime categories have demonstrated widespread year-over-year reductions across the board from 2024 through 2026. Burglaries saw the steepest decline, dropping from 1,105 in 2024 to 908 in 2025, and down further to 761 in 2026. Vehicle burglaries fell continuously from 779 in 2024 to 696 in 2025 and 595 in 2026, while vehicle thefts dropped from 833 (2024) and 838 (2025) down to 713 in 2026. Reported robberies decreased steadily from 70 in 2024 to 49 in 2025 and 46 in 2026, while sex crimes dipped from 328 in 2024 (after rising to 351 in 2025) down to 294 in 2026.

Year to Date Criminal Homicides

Criminal homicide totals have seen a drastic multi-year drop after peaking earlier in the decade. Highs of 63 homicides in 2021 and 61 in 2023 fell to 40 in 2024. The numbers plummeted further in 2025 to 25 criminal homicides. While 2026 saw a modest rise to 30 homicides, the overall figures remain down by more than 50% compared to the peak levels recorded in 2021 and 2023.
