Gas prices are climbing again, and Shreveport-Bossier drivers are feeling it. AAA’s Fuel Prices tracker showed the average price for regular gas in Shreveport-Bossier at $3.414 per gallon on March 16, 2026.

That was up from $3.095 a week earlier and far above the $2.463 average from a month ago. Even so, there are still a few smart ways to keep more money in your pocket.

Start With Price Apps

One of the easiest ways to save is to stop assuming the nearest station has the best deal. Consumer Reports says apps like GasBuddy can help drivers compare prices before they pull in. That matters in a spread-out area like Shreveport, where prices can vary by neighborhood, major roadway, and station brand.

AAA also tracks Louisiana prices, so checking both before a fill-up can help you spot a better option without much work.

Skip Premium Unless Your Car Requires It

This is one of the biggest wallet savers for a lot of people. Consumer Reports says drivers should skip premium gas unless their vehicle specifically requires it. If your owner’s manual says premium is only “recommended,” that is different from “required.”

That does not mean cheap fuel is always the best fuel, though. Consumer Reports also pointed drivers toward Top Tier gasoline, which meets a higher detergent standard meant to help keep engines cleaner over time.

Smooth Driving Still Matters

There is no magic button for saving gas. Consumer Reports says Eco Mode is not some guaranteed fix. The better answer is old-fashioned and simple: accelerate gently, brake smoothly, and avoid driving like every red light is a drag race.

The U.S. Department of Energy says aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds.

Underinflated tires can hurt fuel economy and wear out faster. This is one of the simplest maintenance checks you can make. Also, if you have a roof rack or cargo box you are not using, take it off. Extra drag can chip away at fuel economy, especially on highway trips.

For Shreveport drivers, the lesson is pretty simple. You may not control the sign out front, but you can still control how often you stop there and how much each stop costs.
