Shreveport leaders voted to approve a 13% pay increase for all city workers earlier this year.

This began as an effort to boost the pay of police officers and firefighters, but it expanded and was approved to include all workers. The council voted 5-2 in January to approve the increases. John Nickelson and Grayson Boucher voted against the raises.

Those 13% raises went into effect in February, and were reflected starting on City employees' February 15th paychecks.

One problem the city has been dealing with for years is retention and recruitment of workers. This has been a huge problem in the police and fire departments. The hope is that the pay raise will help convince officers and firefighters to stay with Shreveport over the long haul. So far, this has helped, according to Police Chief Wayne Smith.

This has made a significant impact on the fire department. More than 20 firefighters now make more than $75,000 a year. These raises also impacted all city departments. You can click here to find out the highest paid salaries in city government.
