Costs in Louisiana Are Expected to Hold Steady

A new 2026 Back-to-School Survey from Deloitte found parents will likely have to shell out about $557 per child. The good news is that number is not much different from what we spent last year. But families are setting up priorities to avoid busting the budget this year. Many are looking for discounts to try to keep costs down.

Many parents surveyed say they will be delaying buying some of the pricier electronics like laptops or tablets if possible.

Clothing Takes Priority Over Technology

This survey shows parents expect to increase spending on clothing by about 22% compared to last year, largely because children have outgrown or worn out what they have already.

Spending on the basic classroom supplies will remain flat.

Another survey on back-to-school spending shows we will be spending much more than $557 this year. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates families with K-12 students will spend an average of $863 per household on clothing, shoes, school supplies and electronics. This year’s spending across the nation is expected to top $43.3 billion, which will be a new record. The NRF report also finds many families started shopping weeks ago to try to spread out the spending rather than get hit with a monster tab in August.
