Temps Will Climb Above 100 Degrees in Shreveport Next Week

The temps are starting to warm up and the Weather Channel reports we could see triple digit temps in Shreveport in the coming days. Weather in Shreveport is definitely warming up, but it's going to get worse.

However, as hot as it is right now, it is nowhere near the hottest day in our state.

I'm trying to avoid being outside during the heat of the day and I really do feel for the folks who have to work outside in this blistering heat. We have to try to stay cool, but we also have to try to avoid being gobbled up by mosquitoes.

Why Is It So Hot in Louisiana

Louisiana's geographical location to the Gulf gives us this hot and humid subtropical climate. And that humidity makes it feel so much hotter than the actual temperature.

We often see the heat index climb to 110 degrees or higher during the scorching summer months. Once that heat index gets up to 108, heat advisories are typically issued.

What Was The Hottest Day in Louisiana

That record is held by a small town in north Louisiana. The records kept by the National Weather Service show that the Bossier Parish town of Plain Dealing can boast the hottest day on record in Louisiana. The temp climbed to 114°F on August 10, 1936 in Plain Dealing. That's hot. I can't imagine what it actually felt like. But that would be a day to stay inside in the AC. But most places did not have AC back then. You would typically find air conditioning at businesses and movie theaters. Very few homes had cooling systems in place.

Lafayette also got really hot only a few years ago. The temp climbed to 110 degrees on August 27, 2023 which was a record high. Lake Charles also saw a temp of 109 degrees on that same day. The National Weather Service says the all-time record high temperature for Shreveport is 110° F. That was recorded on August 18, 1909.

What Was the Coldest Day in Louisiana?

So how cold does it get in Louisiana? Our record low temp was also recorded in north Louisiana. The temp dropped to -16° F in Minden on Feb. 13, 1899. I don't think we will ever get close to breaking that record.
