Fire Prevention Week might not officially start until next Monday, but the Bossier and Shreveport fire departments have kicked things off early. And Shreveport has another event going on tomorrow. SFD Chief of Fire Prevention Patricia Dyas says firefighters will be out in the MLK neighborhood installing free smoke detectors. She says the neat thing about this program is that the smoke detectors are free, and are installed for free. And these are the ones with the 10-year lives, so residents won't have to check those batteries every single year. Other Fire Prevention Week events are scheduled at Sheriff's Safety Town and at various schools throughout Shreveport next Monday through Friday. They include fire safety demonstrations, visits from Pluggie and "Fire Safety Dress-Up," where the kids get to dress like firefighters. Chief Dyas says that program was created so kids won't be afraid when they see a firefighter in all of his or her gear.
