Investigators with the Shreveport Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit have arrested a man for cutting an officer in the throat with a box cutter in an attempt to evade an arrest early in the day Monday.

On August 3, 2020, just before 11:00 a.m.,  Property Crimes detectives received information that an individual wanted for numerous felony thefts was at the Home Depot at 110 East Bert Kouns Industrial Loop. Investigators responded to the store and located the wanted man, 47-year-old Eric Brooks.

As investigators attempted to place handcuffs on Brooks, he pushed the officer and fled on foot. The detective gave chase and was able to catch Brooks. During her attempt to gain control of the suspect, Brooks produced a box cutter and began attacking the officer, slashing at her repeatedly with the deadly weapon.

The officer sustained a non-life threatening cut to her throat and her clothing was cut in several places. After a lengthy struggle, the injured detective, a second detective, and a concerned citizen were able to apprehend Brooks. The officer received treatment for her injuries and she is expected to make a full recovery.

Following interviews, Brooks was charged with one count at Attempted Murder of a Peace Officer, one of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer for cutting the officer's throat, and four Felony Theft warrants. Brooks has been arrested by Shreveport Police multiple times in the past for offenses that include Robbery, Resisting Arrest, multiple theft arrests, and other charges.
