An unusual step has been taken by a Caddo District Court Judge involving a 2018 double-homicide. The Judge has granted a request from prosecutors to release sealed grand jury transcripts involving the case to the defense.

The case is the tragic incident in 2018 when a Shreveport man killed a Barksdale Airman and his wife after they offered him a ride. 36 year old DeWayne Willie Watkins stands accused of killing Heather  and Kelly Jose back in November 2018.

Watkins allegedly followed the soon-to-be victims around Mall St. Vincent before asking to use their phone, then asking for a ride. During the ride Watkins shot the Kelly Jose, forced his wife Heather to drive to an ATM and empty the cash, then forced Heather to drive to an abandoned house where he killed her. The bodies were then placed in their car, and the car was set on fire.

After an extensive 3 day manhunt Watkins was cornered by the police. After a six-hour standoff with police he was arrested. The trial is set for October 2021. If Watkins is convicted, he will automatically be sentenced to life in prison without parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
