Shreveport City Councilman John Nickelson talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about Monday's council finance committee meeting and the ongoing city insurance controversy.

Nickelson tells KEEL listeners that the major purpose of the meeting was to address concerns caused by a letter sent to city insurance providers by Risk Manager Evelyn Kelly before Mayor Perkins took office. That letter informed those companies of the city's plans to change carriers, the purpose, according to Perkins, is to save money and increase minority participation. It came to light at the meeting that Kelly was directed to send the letter by Shanerika Flemings, at the time a private citizen and now a special advisor to the mayor.

Nickelson adds that he anticipates that the council will soon consider legislation that would give more power to that body in overseeing and advising any future insurance company changes.
