What is Fetal Abduction? The Shocking True Crime Reality

A new Netflix documentary is shaking up the Ark-La-Tex, and honestly, realizing this horrid crime happened right in our own backyard has so many of us asking the same question: How could this even happen?

The release of “Maternal Instinct”, the chilling story of a woman who faked a pregnancy and murdered an expectant mother to steal her unborn child, is bringing a wave of attention to a horrifying reality many people don't realize exists: fetal abductions.

As shocking as it sounds, these devastating crimes are tragically real. While incredibly rare, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) tracks these cases. To help us understand the warning signs, NCMEC analyzed infant abductions from 1964 through January 2025.

Here are the common characteristics of a typical abductor:

The Profile: Usually a female of childbearing age who appears pregnant. She is often compulsive, relying heavily on manipulation, lying, and deception.

The Motivation: She frequently claims she lost a baby or can't have one. She is often trying to provide a baby for a partner.

The Blueprint: She usually lives in the community where the crime happens and plans the act. She will visit maternity units, ask detailed questions about layouts, and look for a quick opportunity.

The Disguise: She frequently impersonates a nurse, healthcare worker, or social services professional to gain trust.

When an Abduction Happens from the Home Setting:

If the abductor targets a victim's home, NCMEC notes they are more likely to be single while claiming to have a partner. They often stalk health facilities to find a target family, plan the crime in advance, and frequently bring a weapon.

It is a heavy, heartbreaking topic, but awareness is everything when it comes to keeping our local moms and babies safe.
