Gemini Brings Racing Legend to Shreveport for Saturday’s Parade

The Krewe of Gemini parade is set for Saturday and this past weekend's near record setting Krewe of Centaur bash, this should be another Mardi Gras parade for the ages.

Gemini, set for a 3pm start will, like last week's Centaur parade, kick off from downtown Shreveport's Fant Parkway, wind its way to Shreveport-Barksdale Highway and the always raucous Shreve City area, then down Broadmoor's East King's Highway for the grand finale.

And this year, the Krewe of Gemini has a special guest that, in the sports world, has attained legendary status. Al Unser, Jr., known in racing circles simply as "Junior," is a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 (1992, 1994), a two-time winner of the CART Indy Car World Series (1990, 1994), plus a member of both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame and most notably, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

"Junior," whose father, Al, Sr. and brother Bobby are also racing legends, started his racing career at the age of 11 in sprint cars. By the time he was of legal age he was already a CART circuit veteran, finishing 9th in his first Indy 500. Unser was the youngest IROC champ ever at the age of 24, then won his first CART crown in '92 at the age of 30, a season highlighted by his first Indy 500 victory.

During his visit to Shreveport - Bossier, Unser will make public appearances at both Friday's float loading party and as Gemini's special guest, be aboard the parade's largest float when it rolls Saturday afternoon.
