An Airline High School graduate has died while working as an Orlando, Florida, area sheriff's deputy.

According to WDBO-FM and WFTV-TV in Orlando, 34-year-old Deputy Jonathan Scott Pine was responding to reports of car break-ins this morning west of Orlando.

Pine reported the suspect's description over the radio and then spoke to the suspect as part of his investigation.  The suspect, 28-year-old Benjamin Holtermann, then fled and Pine followed him into a residential backyard.  Holtermann then allegedly shot Pine, who then collapsed.

Pine was taken to an Orlando-area hospital where he later died.

Holtermann was found at a nearby house with a gunshot wound.  Authorities are not sure how the suspect was shot because Pine never fired his gun.  They do believe Holtermann may have shot himself.

Pine had been with the Orange County Sheriff's Office since 2011.
