Just after 9:15 pm, patrol officers responded to the 4600 block of North Market Street, just south of the Shell Quick Pantry gas station, concerning a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, they found a male subject of African American decent laying in the turn lane and deceased.
Witnesses said the victim, who was dressed in dark clothing, was standing in the middle of the center turn lane attempting to cross the roadway in an easterly direction.
A maroon vehicle, headed northbound, pulled into the middle turn lane and struck the pedestrian, killing him.
The vehicle then sped off and turned westbound on a nearby street and away from the scene.
Personnel from the Coroner's office, as well as SPD Crime Scene, responded and fingerprints were taken from the victim to help identify him. As of this time, he has not been positively identified, with next-of-kin not being notified.
