Iit’s taken many years, but the visitors’ center at the Red River National Wildlife Refuge is finally open. Fourth-District Louisiana Congressman John Fleming says facilities like this are expensive -- but they play an important role in today’s society. Fleming serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and says a lot of options are under consideration right now to lower the future cost of opening and maintaining federal wildlife refuges. The thirteen-thousand acre refuge stretches from the Arkansas line all the way down to Colfax but the headquarters and visitors’ center are on the Red River just south of Bossier City.  The visitors center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 until 4:00 but the nature trails there will be open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. To get to the refuge headquarters and visitors’ center, just turn south on Sunflower Road off the Jimmie Davis Highway -- follow it to its end -- and then turn right.
