The drive-through Covid vaccine operation at the State Fair Grounds is back open today. LSU Health and Christus Health are teaming up to get vaccines out to as many elderly folks as possible.

The clinic is open from 8am-4pm. You must have an appointment or you will not be able to get the shot. And you must be age 70 or above.

LSU Health Shreveport shut down the operation when they ran out of doses of the vaccine. Christus stepped up with near 1,000 doses to help get this program going again.

Christus will also send staff to help with the operation.

Christus CEO and CMO, Steen Trawick, M.D. says

Our goal is to turn vaccine into vaccinations and get these doses administered as quickly as possible. Being able to partner with LSU Health Shreveport on such a monumental task is vital in vaccinating the most vulnerable in our community. We are stronger and more efficient working together in this battle against COVID-19.

Vaccinations will begin again for those 70 and above on Monday, Jan. 25 at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds. Only those who had previously scheduled appointments will be able to get the vaccine.

This operation will be open today (Monday) through Thursday.

“It is imperative that we resume vaccine distribution to those 70 and over as these citizens are the most vulnerable to becoming critically ill if infected with COVID-19.  We are exceedingly grateful to Dr. Trawick and CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier Health System for their generosity and recognition that LSU Health Shreveport is well positioned to disburse the vaccine quickly and safely with our drive-thru process,” stated G. E. Ghali MD, Chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport.

The LSUHS drive-thru vaccine model is one of many ways medical staff are getting the vaccine out.  Dr. John Vanchiere, Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Director of Vaccine Distribution for LSUHS shared, “Louisiana needs every possible distribution channel to vaccinate all citizens as quickly as possible. Our ability to safely deliver a large number of vaccinations daily is directly attributed to our ongoing partnership with the Louisiana National Guard, the Region 7 Office of Public Health, BPCC and SUSLA.”
