Lawmakers have approved one time pay bonuses for teachers over the past two years. But that money is not included in the salaries.

The National Education Association (NEA) says "even with record-level increases in some states, average teacher pay has failed to keep up with inflation over the past decade. Adjusted for inflation, on average, teachers are making 5% less than they did 10 years ago."

The national average for teachers is now at $69,544. The average starting salary for teachers is $44,530.
