Last week I spotted a teenage girl drift into oncoming traffic on East Kings Highway in Shreveport and nearly get into a head-on collision. Then I noticed she was messing with her cell phone behind the wheel. This could have ended tragically.

But distracted driving is a serious problem in Louisiana. The Bader Scott law firm checked out the data and finds Louisiana among the top 3 states in the country for distracted drivers.

How Bad a Problem is Distracted Driving in the U.S.?

This study shows every day, 9 people in America die in traffic crashes caused by distracted drivers. And the numbers show there are more 40,000 traffic fatalities each year and of those, nearly 8% are caused by distracted driving.

What Are the Worst States for Distracted Driving?

New Mexico, Kansas, and Louisiana are the top 3 worst states for distracted driving, with New Mexico having the highest percentage of traffic crash deaths caused by distracted drivers at 40%. In Kentucky, 26% of fatal crashes are caused by distracted drivers and 17% of the fatal crashes in Louisiana are directly related to distracted drivers.

What Age Group Is Most Distracted on the Roads?

The numbers show almost 6% of distracted drivers involved in fatal crashes are teenagers. But the largest group is those between the ages of 20 and 39. They account for 42% of distracted driving fatal crashes.
