Shreveport’s Mike Johnson Wins Re-election in Landslide
As the future of the House is still uncertain, one Congressman enjoyed an early night's victory. Shreveport Congressman, and current Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson sailed back into his seat in the 4th Congressional District with a commanding win over his Republican challenger.
Not surprisingly, Johnson reclaimed his seat with 85% of the votes, compared to 14% for Republican opponent Joshua Morott from Fort Polk, LA. Johnson enjoyed time in Shreveport at a victory party Tuesday night, before he flew to Mar-A-Lago in Florida to support Republican presidential candidate, now President-Elect, Donald Trump.
Mike Johnson had an auspicious rise to the Speakship through a rocky path. Last October, going on three weeks without a speaker after the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, Johnson garnered a unanimous vote among all Republicans in the House during the first ballot to select him as the next speaker. Although odds-makers probably wouldn't have given him a snowball's chance, Johnson did have the support of one major Republican, Donald J. Trump.
This past April, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich sent out his support for Johnson on X back in April:
As a former Speaker of the House I want To say how much I admire the steady, composed and persistent way Speaker Mike Johnson is working through the hardest job any Speaker has had to contend with, with the possible exception of the Civil War. We should all keep him in our prayers because he is carrying a heavy burden.
As of this writing, the future of the House control is still up in the air. With 218 seats needed for control, the Republicans hold 199, while the Democrats hold 181.
