After a blistering hot summer all across North Louisiana, we can only wonder what’s in store for this winter around our region. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts winter will be colder than normal this year with the coldest periods in mid-December, early and mid-to late January, and early to mid-February.

We should see above normal rainfall amounts during the winter season. This year’s long-term report says our area should also be on the lookout for a tropical storm in late October.

Our first taste of winter is expected to come earlier this year. December is expected to be stormy and cold with a blast of snow across the eastern half of the country.

How Much Snow Will Shreveport Area Get?

Many people want to know how much snow we will get this season. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts we should see significant winter storms move across the nation in January.

1) January 1-7, in the Rockies and across the Plains there is a high potential for heavy snow that may reach as far south as Texas and Oklahoma, followed by a sweep of bitterly cold air.

2) January 16-23, we’ll raise another red flag for bouts of heavy rain and snow across the eastern two-thirds of the country followed by what might be one of the coldest outbreaks of arctic air we have seen in several years. How cold? Some folks could see 40 degrees below zero!

What Will Winter in the South Be Like?

The report says we will see frequent storms bringing cold rains and a wintry mix of wet snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain—as well as chilly temperatures. Louisiana and the other south central states could see some accumulating snow, especially in early January. Folks in the southwest part of the nation will see less than normal winter precip.

Along the I-95 corridor in the east, they can expect to see the precipitation fall more as snow and at times, a lot of it. The hardest hit area in the region will be the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region.

The report is also predicting a white Christmas for many of the north central states.
