Shreveport power restoration is moving fast Monday morning, and SWEPCO says most customers in Shreveport and Bossier City should see lights back on by the end of the day. That is the message SWEPCO's Michael Corbin told KEEL News on Monday, as crews push through lingering ice, downed limbs, and damaged lines.

What SWEPCO Says About Timing in Shreveport and Bossier

As of the interview Monday morning, the outage map showed roughly 33,000 to 34,000 customers still out across SWEPCO’s footprint. In Louisiana, Corbin said outages were down to about 27,600, which he described as less than 12% of SWEPCO customers in the state.

For the Shreveport-Bossier area, the numbers were tighter: about 375 outages in Bossier Parish and 1,147 in Caddo Parish. Corbin said crews expect to have Bossier and Caddo wrapped up by this evening, “if not earlier,” while acknowledging there could be a few isolated issues if more ice forms overnight.

Why South Louisiana Parishes Took a Bigger Hit

Corbin pointed to heavier freezing rain and ice buildup farther south as the reason some parishes are still seeing higher outage totals. He specifically noted harder-hit areas including DeSoto, Natchitoches, and Red River, where more tree and wire damage slowed restoration. SWEPCO planned to shift workers south and set up a base camp in Natchitoches to support that push.

What Those Bright Flashes on Power Lines Really Are

If you saw videos of lines sparking or a sudden flash in the sky, Corbin explained ice can weigh lines down and cause them to sag into trees or other lines, creating a fault. The loud “boom” people report is often not a transformer exploding. Corbin said it is commonly a protective device: “What you’re likely seeing is a fuse blow.”

How Crews Are Working With Ice Still on the Roads

Ice-covered roads remain a major challenge, especially outside urban areas. Crews are driving slowly, sometimes using chains, and SWEPCO is coordinating with city, parish, and DOTD teams when access gets risky.

Corbin also noted SWEPCO had about 5,000 total workers available, including extra vegetation crews to clear trees before line repairs can happen.
