The nation will honor fallen Shreveport Police Officer Chateri Payne during a ceremony in Washington D.C. tonight. Congressman Mike Johnson says Payne's name will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial during a virtual candlelight vigil this evening.

Congressman Johnson says the vigil will be live-streamed in honor of all the fallen officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice last year.


The National Memorial has 22,217 names on it. The goal during tonight's event is to light that many virtual candles.

Payne was gunned down outside her home on Midway last year. Her estranged boyfriend is accused in the murder. She was in uniform and was about to head to work her overnight shift. Two other men also face charges in this case. KTAL reports no new court date has been set for Tre’vion Anderson, Glenn Frierson and Lawrence Pierre who face charges in this case.

Chateri Payne's name is one of 307 names that is being added to the list of heroes who died last year. Payne's name has also been added to the local Memorial in downtown Shreveport which is next to the Aquarium.

The list will grow even more next year. There have been 43 officers who have died in the line of duty so far in 2020.
