Shreveport Murder Case Is Featured on Oxygen Show ‘Snapped’
A Shreveport murder case got national attention over the weekend.
This case dates back to 2010 when Air Force Sgt Brian Spinks was brutally murdered in his Quail Creek apartment in the Shreve City area.
This bloody murder was featured on the Oxygen network show 'Snapped' on Sunday night. The episode will air several more times this week.
29-year-old Spinks is described as a patriot and hero and a Dad with a heart of gold. He met Kimethia Coleman while he was serving at Barksdale Air Force Base. Once he met the social worker, he fell in love.
But this brutal crime shocked the community.
Former Shreveport police detective Eric Farquhar describes the crime scene:
The amount of injuries that Brian sustained is indicative of a person with a lot of rage or anger. They have some reason to be mad enough to do that kind of damage.
This murder happened early on the morning of January 17, 2010. Coleman had been out with friends at a downtown Shreveport nightclub. She ran into Spinks at the club where she apparently saw him casually dancing with another woman.
The show includes interviews with Spinks' father who says his son told him shortly before the murder that he was "feeling smothered in the relationship". The Dad told the Snapped producers Coleman had been going through Spinks' phone and she checked his emails. Spinks left Coleman a voicemail on the night of the murder telling her he was done with her.
Coleman called police on the night of the murder and claimed another man killed her boyfriend.
Police found Spinks dead inside the apartment. He had been stabbed more than 60 times and his throat had been severely cut.
Coleman was covered in blood and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Detectives were able to determine that Coleman's story about another man being involved was simply not true. They booked Coleman with Manslaughter, but that charge was later upgraded to 2nd Degree Murder.
What Was Coleman's Defense?
Coleman also tried to convince the jury that Spinks was abusive and she killed him in self defense. But the evidence did not support her claims.
Caddo Parish DA Public Information Officer Ivy Woodard told the 'Snapped' producers “There was just no evidence that pointed to Brian being an abusive person.”
Police believe Coleman killed Spinks during a fit of jealousy and rage when she found out he wanted to break up with her.
Coleman pleaded not guilty—by reason of insanity. But she was found competent to stand trial. In May of 2012, the jury unanimously found Coleman guilty of 2nd degree murder.

She was sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole.
When Can You See this Episode Again?
The show featuring this brutal murder airs again Monday March 9 at 6pm and on Thursday morning, March 12 at 10am, Friday March 13 at 5pm. and Sunday afternoon March 15 at 4pm on the Oxygen Network.
