Shreveport Dog Park Is Not Closing
The Shreveport dog park is under water today. It's been closed for a few weeks because of high water. That is not something new. It happens periodically during the year based on the level on the Red River.
Dog Park Alliance Responds to Complaints About Flooding
But Cynthia Keith with the Shreveport Dog Park Alliance says this park is very popular and it will not be closing despite what you might have heard. Shreveport Councilwoman LeVette Fuller told KEEL News:
I would be in favor of closing it in favor of doing a dog park somewhere that makes more sense. I'm not saying dogs don't deserve a dog park and that dog lovers shouldn't have it because it is a nice amenity. But I would want it in an area that follows the logic of the concept.
Keith says the Parish Commission came up with the idea of going to the Red River Waterway Commission to get the funding for the dog park. She says the city had been planning for many years to put a dog park on the riverfront. She adds
What kind of city does not want to enhance a beautiful area such as river front. And look at San Antonio and the river walk.
Did We Know About Flooding Concerns in Beginning?
Keith says flooding was never an issue when this park was planned or they would have never pursued this particular site. She does say they are plans to get smaller dog parks in our neighborhood. But she says this dog park attracts people from all over the region. She even says people passing through with pups will often stop to enjoy the local dog park.
The dog park opened on July 14th, 2017. Here's a little History of dog park.
