When Will Shreveport’s Muddy Water Problem Be Resolved?
SHREVEPORT, LA – I rarely order a fountain drink at restaurants. Usually, I order bottled water. But over the weekend, I did order one in Shreveport and the very first sip was shocking. The immediate taste I got was mud. The drink tasted so dirty. I couldn’t drink it. Restaurant owners have been complaining about the dirty water taste in Shreveport for weeks. Customers have been complaining and many are demanding their money back after getting a drink that tastes like dirt.
What Is Wrong with Shreveport Water?
Shreveport Water and Sewer Director William Daniel says this is a temporary problem and his crews are working to correct the problem.
Daniel says this muddy taste is caused by naturally occurring algae blooms in Cross Lake. He says this has led to the presence of Geosmin, a harmless compound responsible for an earthy taste and odor.
Daniel says the water is completely safe to drink and use for household purposes. “Geosmin is not harmful to health, but we understand it can be unpleasant. We are actively working to resolve this issue and appreciate the community’s patience.”

What Is Shreveport Doing to Correct Water Taste?
Cross Lake water is typically treated for algae between March and November, but Daniel says the unseasonably warmer water in Cross Lake led to additional algae growth in December and January. Shreveport has ordered more copper sulfate to continue this treatment process, but that order was delayed because of last week’s snow in South Louisiana. Daniel says suppliers are working to expedite the shipment, which is expected to arrive soon.
Daniel's office issued a statement to let the public know “We are committed to providing our residents with safe, high-quality water and are taking every measure to address the current situation.”
When Will the Shreveport Water Taste Be Fixed?
Daniel says residents can expect noticeable improvements in taste and smell over the next two weeks as copper sulfate treatments resume and ozone operations continue. Daniel tells the city council he hopes to have the problem resolved within the next week.
