During the House Ways and Means Committee hearing on the IRS' targeting of conservative groups yesterday, Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) said, "Tea Party groups wouldn’t have been scrutinized if they didn't apply for tax-exempt status."

Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) response was, "So surrender your first amendment rights and we might approve your application?"

Paul Ryan (R-Wis) was next to ask his question. Instead, he took liberty to respond to McDermott's outlandish comment which got lots of cheers.

Ryan asked a member of a conservative group who was harassed by the IRS about the experience.

"The IRS told you if your board signed a letter saying they would no longer picket or protest on behalf of the pro-life movement at Planned parenthood, that they could receive their tax exempt status, is that correct," Ryan asked.

She responded, "That is correct."

Ryan continued: "So surrender your first amendment rights and we might approve your application?" She replied, "That's correct."
