Sometime I make promises I really should think about a little longer. This is one of those promises. In early December I was talking with the crew from Operation Santa Claus and they told me it has been a tough year to bring in cash. Folks have been struggling to make ends meet and the giving was down a bit.

I have been involved with Operation Santa Claus since the very beginning in 1984. I do all kinds of crazy things for this program.

So, I thought about what I could do to help. Sure, I can donate toys or a few bucks, but how could I bring in big money. Well, I harken back to 2020 when we brought in thousands and thousands of dollars when I pledged to shave my head. Our goal back then was $15,000 and we easily surpassed that. But I promised at the time I would NEVER do that again. It wasn’t about the hair. It was about the cold. Your head is always cold.

But then I thought about all the children we could help if I did it again. So we set the bar a little higher. On Monday, December 8 I agreed to shave my head if we raised $20,000. And this time, we only had a week to get it done. Deliveries were scheduled to begin on December 15th.

How Soon Did the Money for Operation Santa Claus Roll In

On that very same day (Monday the 8th), an anonymous donor showed up at the radio station with an envelope full of cash. All he told me was “let’s just say you are half way there”. Yes, he brought in $10,000!!! I was completely shocked. The next day we had a remote at the Brookshires on Line Avenue and brought in about $3 grand. And then Wednesday morning, a man shows up at the station with another envelope full of cash. It was $7,000 and that got us over the top. And we did it in 3 days!! By the end of the week, we had raised more than $25,000. That cash bought a lot of toys:

Why Operation Santa Claus Is So Important

There is something about children at Christmas that just makes me smile. I want every child to have a magical Christmas. It breaks my heart every time I hear a story about a family struggling to pay the bills this time of year, much less provide gifts for the children.

This money helped provide Christmas for hundreds of local children. To everyone who donated, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really wish I could reach out and give you a hug with my new “cue ball” head.

Thanks so much to all of the Shreveport police officers and firefighters who help make this program possible.

Also thanks to my dear friend Grace Anne Blake and her crew from Avalon Hair Salon for taking time out of her busy schedule to take care of the shaving. She has always been a huge supporter of Operation Santa Claus.
