The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) will soon have a new member from Northwest Louisiana to replace Tony Davis who resigned late last year.

The runoff for the District 4 seat on BESE matched Shreveport attorney Michael Melerine against LSUS professor Cassie Williams. Melerine easily won the runoff pulling in more than 23 thousand votes to just over 14 thousand for Williams.

Statement from Kelli Bottger, State Director, Louisiana Federation for Children Action Fund:

Michael Melerine believes that school choice options enable families to choose the best educational environment for their children. The Louisiana Federation for Children Action Fund will continue to stand alongside elected officials, Democratic or Republican, who support parents and protect school choice programs that serve the state’s most disadvantaged children.

In the runoff for the 2nd Congressional district race in the New Orleans area, State Senator Troy Carter wins the seat over fellow Senator Karen Carter Peterson. Carter got more than 48,000 votes to 39,000 for Peterson a margin of 55% to 45%.

Carter will replaces former Congressman Cedric Richmond, who stepped down from the House to serve as a senior staffer at the White House with President Joe Biden.
