Louisiana is closer to becoming the nation's 26th state to allow medical marijuana. Southern University and LSU have opted to become medical marijuana cultivators but will have to go through a lengthy regulatory and legislative process before they are allowed to grow. Under the law, there can be only one licensed cultivator and 10 medical marijuana facilities in the state.

The frame work for medical marijuana in the state was passed in 1978 but until two additional pieces of legislation were passed this year, the program wasn't feasible. Experts say not only is this good for patients but will bring in extra revenue and jobs to the state.
