
Veteran Population by State: Where Does Louisiana Rank Nationally?
SHREVEPORT, LA - Millions of veterans have retired to various communities across the United States. More than 257,000 of them now call Louisiana home.
Several states lead the nation in attracting veterans, but Louisiana is about middle of the pack in terms of the states with the most veterans deciding to settle down here after years of service in the military. Among the southern states, Florida and Georgia are two of the states with the largest veteran populations.
But it is no surprise that Texas leads the nation in veteran population. The Lone Star State has several large military bases and many of these vets wrap up their years of service in Texas and decide to stay in that state. One of the primary attractions for Texas is the tax structure. There is no income tax in Texas. So these vets can move on to a second career and not pay income taxes. Texas also have very liberal gun laws which is a big attraction for veterans. Texas also has a booming economy which means there are many high paying job opportunities for veterans.

Shreveport-Bossier attracts thousand of veterans because of the local V.A. hospital. We also have Barksdale Air Force Base which is one of the premier bases in the south. Barksdale is home of the 2nd Bomb Wing and Air Force Global Strike Command. There are more than 14.000 military and civilian personnel serving at Barksdale.
