Ruston’s New Home: Louisiana Tech Officially Joins the Sun Belt Conference
Louisiana Tech University's football program is officially returning to a familiar home: the Sun Belt Conference. This monumental announcement marks a new chapter for the Bulldogs, with their re-entry expected sometime in the 2026 season, depending on their departure from Conference USA. Their return, after more than two decades away, is set to energize the program and its ravenous fanbase, reigniting the fierce in-state rivalries in the conference's regional footprint.
The Sun Belt Return Re-Ignites Louisiana Tech's Local Rivalries
When Louisiana Tech left the Sun Belt back in 2001, the school was left with no regional rivals, leaving the school's football team to lose some public attention. Returning to the Sun Belt places Louisiana Tech head to head with rivals in state, like the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, or just half an hour down the road from Louisiana Tech are their friends University of Louisiana at Monroe.
With Louisiana Tech sports more likely to compete head-to-head with teams locally known, the attention and attendance of local games are likely to rise. The addition of Louisiana Tech not only benefits the schools, but it fits perfectly into Sun Belt commissioner Keith Gill's plan to focus on regional rivalries.
A New Era for Louisiana Tech Athletics
Louisiana Tech's athletics haven't seen incredible success in the last few years, and while fingers can be pointed in a lot of different directions for blame, there's a shining chance to re-energize the school's teams with the Sun Belt Conference.
With a renewed local interest, the energy of packed local crowds for football, basketball, baseball, and softball games will send a shockwave through Louisiana Tech, ULM, ULL, and the rest of the Sun Belt.
